Troy Pushes Past Jackson State, Remains Unbeaten
2/19/2020 11:22:00 PM | Baseball
Ryan Fultz became the fifth Troy pitcher this season to earn a win on the mound for the Trojans while Harry Colon hung the loss for Jackson State. Rigsby Mosley and Dalton Sinquefield each went 3-4 with one and two RBIs, respectively.
Troy survived a scare in the top of the third when the Tigers scored all five of their runs on the night off of a few well-executed hit-and-run plays. Matt Snell was Troy's first reliever out of a bullpen that pitched 6.1 scoreless innings from that point on.
Cerny finally brought the Trojan bats to life in the fourth inning with a 398 ft. solo shot to left-center field, his second of the year and Troy's longest of the season. Three batters later, Mosley ripped a single through the right side to score Austin Garofalo and William Sullivan.
The Trojans would put at least two runs on the board in each inning the rest of the way, including another four-spot in the bottom of the seventh. Cerny was just a foot away from his second homer of the night in the sixth inning when he hit a double high off the wall to eventually set up a two-RBI double from William Sullivan the next at-bat.
The next inning, Mosley, Sinquefield and Caleb Bartolero all hit doubles in the seventh to extend Troy's lead to seven. The Trojans would add two more runs in the eighth before clinching their first 5-0 start since 2016.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"The key to tonight's win was the pitching out of the bullpen, it was terrific. To get six and a third scoreless innings out of the pen, that allowed our offense to get back in the game. We have a good lineup and there aren't a lot of cracks in it. [Opposing pitchers] have to throw good pitches the get these kids out."
On Louisiana Tech Series
"It'll be a very good series. That's a good ball club coming into town. They've gotten off to an excellent start and are a regional-type team every year. We were fortunate to win two out of three last year in Ruston and we'll have our hands full again this year."
