Troy Falls in Regular Season Finale to Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – Troy struggled to stymie a hot-hitting Georgia Southern squad as it fell in the regular season finale Friday afternoon in Statesboro. The Trojans hit .163 compared to the Eagles' .361 percentage as Troy dropped the final match of the series, 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-16).
Troy (10-6, 10-6 SBC) finishes the regular season with 10 Sun Belt wins which ties for the most conference wins in a season in program history (2012, 2019). The Trojans' 20 league victories over the past two seasons marks the most in a two-year span in school history.
Cheyenne Hayes and Halston Hillier led the Trojans with eight kills apiece while Julia Brooks and Caitlin Cooper each tallied five. Amara Anderson posted 25 assists in the loss while Lacey Jeffcoat registered her third 14-dig match of the week.
Mya Wilson (15/0/21, .714) and Baylor Bumford (13/1/18, .667) led the Georgia Southern (4-9, 4-9 SBC) attack.
"Very tough loss today," head coach Josh Lauer said. "Georgia Southern executed their offense much better than we did. We need to take what we learned today and get ready for Wednesday and our opening match in the conference tournament."
Set One
Hayes recorded a pair of early kills to give Troy a 7-6 lead, but Georgia Southern used a 3-0 run to force the Trojans' first timeout of the match at 9-7. Two-straight Trojan points out of the timeout deadlocked the teams at 9-9 before the teams exchanged points to a 13-13 tie. Troy used a 4-0 run, highlighted by a block from Brooks and Hillier, to pull ahead 17-13. The Eagles wouldn't go away, however, and were able to tie the set at 20-20. Cooper won a crucial battle at the net to put the Trojans on top by one before she teamed up with Hillier for another block to prompt a Georgia Southern timeout at 22-20. The Eagles then took five of the final six points to take a 1-0 lead in the match, 25-23.
Set Two
Troy maintained a two-point advantage throughout much of the early going in set two, aided by kills from Tori Hester at 7-5 and Cooper at 8-6. Hayes blasted a ball down the line to give the Trojans a 9-8 lead before an Anderson kill capped off a 3-0 to run to make the score 15-11 entering the media timeout. Georgia Southern came out of the timeout with a 6-0 outburst to take the lead 17-15. Hester eventually ended a 12-0 Georgia Southern run with a kill at 23-16. The Eagles took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-16 set-two win.
Set Three
Georgia Southern picked up right where they left off, racing out to a quick 8-3 lead in the third set. The Eagles extended their lead to six at 11-5 before a solo block from Cooper halted the bleeding. Georgia Southern kept its foot on the gas and extended its lead to seven at the media timeout. Troy struggled to slow the Eagle attack as Georgia Southern clinched the sweep, 25-16.
