TROY, Ala. -- Despite holding a 14-2 advantage in shots and attempting four more corner kicks (8-4), the Troy women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Appalachian State Friday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex.
In the defeat, sophomores Melissa Kuya-Strobel and Taytum Terrell each recorded four shots, while freshman Lindsey LaRoche made one save.
The Trojans (0-6-1, 0-6-1 Sun Belt) fell behind early Friday, when an errant pass was intercepted by Izzy Wood. Wood dribbled the remaining 25 yards unmarked and fired a shot that just eluded the diving attempt of LaRoche.
The shot was the lone attempt that the Mountaineers (3-7-1, 3-5 Sun Belt) attempted through the first 45-minutes of action.
In the first half, Troy's best opportunity to score came midway through the first half when Terrell was ripped to the ground inside the App State box. The contact was ruled to be incidental and no penalty-kick was awarded.
For the first half, the Trojans outshot the Mountaineers, 6-1.
Following the half time break, the Trojans again had the best scoring opportunity to score when Regielly Halldorsdottir ripped a shot that Kerry Eagleston was able to tip wide. The bounding ball found Kuya-Strobel open in the box, but her shot just rose above the bar. Eagleston made a pair of saves to earn a clean sheet.
Over the final 30 minutes of action, Troy had a few opportunities, but none came as close as the attempt by Kuya-Strobel.
The Trojans return to action Sunday afternoon when the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers visit the Troy Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
• The two shots allowed marked the fewest total shots the Trojans have allowed in a match since they held Alabama State without a shot back in 2009 (Sept. 6).
• Five of Troy's six losses have come by one goal.
• The Trojans 14 total shots were the most they have recorded all season.
• Kuya-Strobel's four total shots were a new career-best.
• Terrell's four shots were also a career-best.
• Troy was shutout for the third time this season.
• The Trojans have now lost three matches in-a-row, and eight of their last nine dating back to last season.
