Trojans Head to Little Rock for Wednesday Night Showdown

TROY, Ala. – The Troy Trojans men's basketball program looks for a Sun Belt series-sweep Wednesday night at Little Rock. Troy won the original matchup against Little Rock 76-71 back on Jan. 9.
Wednesday's matchup at the Jack Stephens Center is Troy's lone Wednesday Sun Belt Conference game of season. Troy is 2-1 this season on Wednesday's.
Troy returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Red Wolves of Arkansas State visit Trojan Arena. Saturday's game will be a doubleheader day as the Troy women's basketball program is scheduled to play a 2 p.m. Tip-off for the men's game will be approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game, or 4:15 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT- (Troy, 8-12, 4-5 Sun Belt).
Troy looks to even its conference record Wednesday night at first place Little Rock. The Trojans are coming off one of their strongest performances of the season last Saturday afternoon against Georgia State. In that game, Troy outscored the Panthers 42-32 over the final 20 minutes to earn a crucial 75-65 victory. Junior Ty Gordon scored 20 points and recorded six assists, while KJ Simon scored 16 points and contributed 9 rebounds. After a back-and-forth first half that ended in a 33 all tie, the Trojans used a late 12-2 run to take a 67-58 lead with 2:09 remaining. Down the stretch, the Trojans hit five clutch free throws to drop the Panthers. Four Trojans scored in double figures led by Gordon and Simon. Sophomore Tahj Small made his fifth start of the season, scoring 10 points.
LAST TIME OUT- (Little Rock, 13-7, 7-2 Sun Belt)
The first place Little Rock Trojans enter Wednesday night's contest having won four of five at the Jack Stephens Center. So far this season, Little Rock is 7-2 at home and a 3-1 in Sun Belt Conference play. Since playing Troy 10 days ago, the Trojans are 2-1. The lone loss in that span was a 52-43 to South Alabama, where Little Rock played without star guard Markquis Nowell who has missed three of Little Rock's last four contests. After missing the games against Troy and South Alabama, Nowell played just four minutes in Little Rock's 71-55 victory over Coastal Carolina last Thursday. On Saturday, Nowell did not play in Little Rock's 73-57 victory at App State. On the season, the guard is averaging 17.7 points and 4.4 assists per game. Junior forward Ruot Monyyong is another Little Rock's three players who average in double-figures. For the season, Moyyong is averaging a double-double (11.6 points and 10.5 rebounds). The forward failed to record a double-double at App State for the first time in eight games, recording four points and 11 rebounds. In the previous matchup at Troy, Moyyong recorded 16 points, 15 rebounds and 1 block. The junior has 11 double-doubles this season.
Trojan Storylines
• The Trojans need just one more Sun Belt victory to equal the programs total from a season ago. Last year Troy went 5-13 in Sun Belt Conference play.
• The Trojans close out a three-game stretch Wednesday night against the three top teams in the Sun Belt. Last Thursday, Troy played Georgia Southern who entered the game tied for first place. On Saturday, Georgia State was 6-2 in the conference and tied for first place. Heading into Wednesday's action, Little Rock sits at 7-2 and in sole possession of first place.
• The Trojans of Troy and the Little Rock Trojans meet for the second time in less than two weeks. Troy and Little Rock played back on Jan. 9 at Trojan Arena. In that game, Troy defeated Little Rock 76-71 to hand the Trojans their first Sun Belt loss of the season.
• The Trojans have recorded 38 assists over the last two games. On Thursday, the Trojans dished out 20 assists for the second time this season. Troy recorded an assist on 74.1 percent of its made baskets (20-of-27).
• The Trojans have hit 53 3-pointers over the last five games. Troy hit a season-best 15 3-pointers in the victory over Little Rock back on Jan. 9. The 15 3-pointers

Sophomore KJ Simon turned in one of the strongest performances of his career Saturday afternoon against Georgia State. Simon scored 16 points (five shy of his career-high of 21 points), grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out 3 assists. Simon recorded his first double figure scoring output since Nov. 30 against Shorter when he scored 11.
