TROY, Ala. – Behind a veteran lineup, the Troy men's golf team opens its 2019-20 season on Monday and Tuesday at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate at the Hattiesburg Country Club. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
"We're taking back three guys who played in the event last year and who had us in the mix for a title after 36 holes," head coach Bart Barnes said. "We had some solid summers and have a group of guys who have trust in each other because they've teed it up together for a while now. Our qualifying looked good and hopefully we can carry some momentum over."
Barnes will call on senior Jake Tiffin, juniors Ryan Morrison and Connor Futrell and sophomores Brent Hamm and Will McFadden for the opening event. Redshirt freshman Nicklas Borrmann will compete as an individual.
"We played several rounds of golf in qualifying and it was nip-and-tuck with the lead changing and the five-hole changing each round," Barnes said. "It came right down to the final 18 holes, and when you can get that level of competition where nobody is feeling secure in their spot, it's only going to make us better."
Troy finished fourth in the event last year and entered the final round just two shots off the pace. Tiffin tied for 10thoverall with a 1-under 212 thanks to a 2-under 69 in the final round. Futrell shot even par and McFadden was 4-over.
Futrell earned All-Sun Belt honors last season after leading the Trojans with a 73.31 stroke average, 1.54 score vs. par and seven rounds under par. Hamm had a solid spring for Troy with a 74.88 average while McFadden and Tiffin give the Trojans an ability to go low every round with a combined seven rounds under par last year.
T-Time: Due to the 36 holes scheduled for Monday, teams will play a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. and players will be in carts. Troy is scheduled to play in a foursome with McNeese State, Southern Miss and Sam Houston State beginning play on holes one thru four.
The Field: Troy, Southern Miss, McNeese State, Sam Houston State, Missouri State, North Alabama, Oral Roberts, Samford, Austin Peay, Central Arkansas, Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana, New Orleans, Houston Baptist
