TROY, Ala. – For just the second time in the two programs' history, Troy and Akron will meet on the gridiron. The Trojans will travel to the Buckeye state to take on the Zips with Saturday's kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. (CT) at InfoCision Stadium.
Troy (1-1) will make the 830-mile trek up to Ohio for the first time since 2009 for a date with Akron (0-3) and a chance to improve upon their 5-3 all-time record against MAC schools.
Troy enters the match-up coming off a 47-42 loss to Southern Miss, a game that saw senior quarterback Kaleb Barker break the school record for passing yards in a game with 504 all while four different receivers past the century mark in receiving yards for the first time in program history.
Entering this weekend's contest Troy has put up some of the best passing numbers in the country. The Trojans rank fourth nationally in passing yards per game at 393 per contest. Though the Trojans are one of the best teams in the country when they air-it-out, Troy doesn't just rely on the pass ranking 16th nationally in total offense.
The defense has been stout in the trenches through two games allowing just 83 yards on the ground, the 19th best mark in the country. Carlton Martial, a 2018 Freshman All-American, has been the anchor of the group so far, racking up a team-high 29 tackles including 6.5 for loss. Not only has Martial been the anchor for the Trojans, he has also been one of the best linebackers in the country. He leads the NCAA in tackles for loss with 6.5 so far while ranking third in solo tackles (16) and second in total tackles.
When Troy and Akron meet on Saturday it will be just the second all-time meeting between the two programs. The lone meeting in the series occurred back on Sept. 23, 2017 in Troy with the Trojans coming out on top by a score of 22-17. In that contest Akron got on the board first with a field goal before Troy scored 16 unanswered points to take ahold of the game.
"We're playing at their place, and it's a big game for us," head coach Chip Lindsey said. "We need to respond, rebound and go on the road and play well. If we want to have any chance to win the Sun Belt, we need to be able to win on the road and play well on the road. I think our players understand that."
Know Your Foe
Akron is coming off its third loss in as many weeks after falling to Central Michigan last weekend, 45-24. This will be just the second home game of the year for the Zips, and its second against a team from Alabama after they lost to UAB 31-20 on Sept. 7.
Quotable – Troy Head Coach Chip Lindsey
"This week we have Akron on the road, which is a big challenge for us because it's the first road game for us. It's a long trip and there's a lot to handle with that. Akron is a team with a new head coach, new excitement and new energy. Obviously, a new staff, which brings different challenges. Throughout the years they've had some really good players come through there, and three or four years ago now they won the MAC (Division) championship. So, they've had success historically."
