MOBILE, Ala. – Troy women's golf wrapped play Monday at the USA Intercollegiate with a 6-over 294 to finish in fifth place overall. Anna Claire Little tied for seventh place at 1-under after shooting 73 in the final round at the Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.
"I thought there were a lot of positives that we can take from the tournament," head coach Randy Keck said. "We're such a young team and to respond well after only practicing for about a month was encouraging. This is going to be a good team. We have a lot of depth and a lot of firepower."
Little was steady throughout all three of her rounds with just eight bogeys compared to her nine birdies. It marked the first time in her career that she shot under-par for a tournament and it comes on the heels of a horrific car accident she was involved in less than a month ago. The accident sent her boyfriend's car down a hill and into a fence and the entire left side of the vehicle was cut off.
"To go through what she's had to endure and respond the way she did, was outstanding," Keck said. "It showed that her mind is in the right place, and she was focused on what she was doing on the course. I just can't say enough about her, she's an awesome individual."
Nicole Lorup was Troy's top finisher among those counting towards the team card (Little played as an individual) as the sophomore finished in 12thplace at 2-over par following a final round 73. Lorup, the reigning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, carded three birdies in the final round.
Judith Castro turned in her second straight round of 72 to climb into a tie for 13thplace after dropping three birdies in her final round. Ainsley Cowart and ShaeLee Scarberry tied for 30thplace at 6-over after rounds of 75 and 76, respectively, Monday. Elisabeth Preus rounded out the field for the Trojans in a tie for 40thplace at 8-over.
UAB held off many suitors for the team title with the Blazers slipping to 10-over in Monday's round; however, UAB managed to squeeze out a 1-shot victory over North Florida. Houston Baptist and Western Kentucky finished five shots back in a tie for third and Troy was seven shots off the pace in fifth.
Two of Troy's true freshmen also competed as individuals – Sarah Johnson tied for 48thplace after shooting 3-over on Monday and Brooklyn Bostick placed 92ndafter a final round 78.
Next up for Troy is a trip to the Starmount Fall Classic in Greensboro, N.C. on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1
