GADSDEN, Ala. – All six of Troy's golfers are in the top 11 following Monday's opening two rounds of the Chris Banister Golf Classic, and the Trojans hold a five-shot lead over Murray State with 18 holes to play.
"It is a good experience for our young team to have an opportunity to win a tournament," head coach Randy Keck said. "We got some good rounds under our belts this morning despite some bad weather and not getting off to a good start. I was proud of the way we battled back and ended the round with a bunch of birdies."
Nicole Lorup and Elisabeth Preus are tied for third place at 3-over following the two rounds. Lorup cared a 1-under in the opening round and a 4-over on her second trip, while Preus shot a 73 and 74; complete hole-by-hole scoring was not made available. Preus' score did not count towards the team card because she was playing as an individual.
"All six of our golfers have played well throughout the year so far and to see them all in the top 11 shows the depth we have," Keck said. "We even left a couple of good players at home; it was an impressive showing today."
Lorup carded seven birdies on the day, Preus added six while Anna Claire Little and ShaeLee Scarberry finished the day with five each. Lorup crushed the par 5 holes to the tune of 5-under par, the best in the field, and Scarberry was 3-under on the par 5s.
"We've been struggling in par 5 scoring in qualifying and at the first event," Keck said. "It has been a focus in practice, so I'm excited to have played them well today because that has definitely been a weak spot this year."
Judith Castro also turned in a pair of steady rounds with a 1-over 73 in the first round and then a 3-over 75 in the afternoon session to sit tied for fifth place while Scarberry is in eighth place at 7-over; she shot even par in the opening round and 7-over in round two.
Ainsley Cowart fired matching rounds of 76 and is tied for ninth place while Little is tied for 11th place after rounds of 79 and 74.
