TROY, Ala. – Picking up where he left off last year, Troy sophomore linebacker Carlton Martial was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the season-opening victory over Campbell this past Saturday, the league office announced Monday.
A Freshman All-American a year ago, Martial recorded a game-high and career-high 13 tackles in Troy's, 43-14, win over the Fighting Camels. The Mobile, Ala., native recorded nine solo tackles in the win and finished with nine more stops than any other Trojan in the game.
Martial led a defensive effort that held Campbell to just 143 yards of total offense, the fewest by a Troy opponent since 2008. Additionally, the Trojans yielded just 50 yards on the ground thanks to eight tackles for loss, two of which came from Martial.
Last season, the 5-foot-10 former walk-on finished fifth nationally against the run according to Pro Football Focus – three of the four players ranked ahead of him were selected within the first 13 picks of the NFL Draft.
Martial's 13 tackles tied for 12thmost in the opening weekend nationally and the pair of tackles for loss tied for the 22ndmost in the country.
Troy is off this week before hosting regional rival Southern Miss at The Vet on Sep. 14.
