Troy’s Alexis Garrett Named Sun Belt’s National SAAC Representative

TROY, Alabama – Alexis Garrett, a member of the Troy track & field team, will serve the Sun Belt Conference as the league's representative on the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She begins her three-year term on the committee beginning with the 2019-20 athletic year.

"I am honored to represent not only Troy University, but the entire Sun Belt Conference and every student-athlete that is a part of it," Garrett said. "I want them all to know that in me, they have a representative that embraces integrity, confidence and determination. I am so excited for this opportunity to have a hand in improving the student-athlete experience and super thankful to be chosen by the committee."

The mission of the National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.

Within this structure, the national SAAC representatives generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure, solicit student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation, recommend potential NCAA legislation, review, react and comment to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest and actively participate in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA.

"Alexis is a shining example of a complete student-athlete," Troy Director of Athletics Brent Jones said. "She excels in the classroom, is elite in competition and is a leader in our community. We are so proud of Alexis for earning this opportunity to represent her peers, our university and the Sun Belt Conference at the national level, and we have the utmost confidence that she will use this platform to make a positive impact for student-athletes across the country."

Garrett, who serves on the executive board of Troy's campus SAAC, has spearheaded conference-wide mental health awareness initiatives and planned and coordinated several local community enrichment projects including Troy's annual Bench Out Breast Cancer event.

Selected a team captain, the Union, S.C., native has medaled at both the Sun Belt Indoor and Outdoor Championships during her career and was named to the All-Sun Belt team following the 2018 outdoor season.
