Â
TROY, Alabama – Chase Smartt headlined Troy's All-Sun Belt selections as the senior catcher was named to the All-Sun Belt First Team, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Additionally, Drew Frederic, Cory Gill, Sadler Goodwin and Rigsby Mosley were named to the All-Sun Belt Second Team. Troy's five All-Sun Belt selections are tied with Coastal Carolina for the most in the league.
Â
Smartt is one of the hottest hitters in the country over the past month as he has raised his batting average 56 points from .287 to a team-leading .343. Over that 19-game period, Smartt is batting .430 (34-for-79) with 14 doubles, five home runs, 22 RBIs, a .477 on-base percentage and a .797 slugging percentage.
Â
The Troy, Ala., native leads the Sun Belt with 21 doubles on the season and also ranks fourth in the league in batting, seventh in sac flies and 10thin hits. Smartt is tied for fourth all-time in Troy history with 47 career doubles while his 209 hits rank seventh all time. He is also Troy's all-time leader in games played with 218 over his four-year career.
Â
Defensively, Smartt is the best in the Sun Belt behind the plate and has been his entire career. He has allowed just six passed balls and has thrown out 39 percent of potential base stealers in his career.
Â
Frederic, a native of Niceville, Fla., enters the Sun Belt Tournament batting at a .320 clip with 13 doubles and a team-leading 10 home runs. Frederic ranks third in the league with 73 hits on the year and is fourth with 56 runs scored while ranking fourth with his 18 stolen bases. He is tied for seventh all-time in Troy history with 58 career stolen bases and his 194 hits are the ninth most.
Â
Frederic made the move from third base to shortstop following the first 14 games of the season and the junior made just two errors in 175 total chances at shortstop.
Â
Gill's move to the weekend rotation coincided with Troy's run of seven Sun Belt series wins over the final eight weeks of the season. As a starter, Gill posted a 7-2 record with a 4.14 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 54.1 innings of work. His first start was Troy's victory at Coastal Carolina in the series finale and two weeks later he locked down the Friday night role.
Â
A native of Cottonwood, Ala., Gill was the anchor at the back of Troy's bullpen before moving into the rotation. He recorded five saves over nine relief appearances and allowed runs in just three of his bullpen outings. Gill is tied for second in the league with seven wins and his saves' total ranks as the eighth best.
Â
Goodwin was one of the top run producers in the Sun Belt Conference as he drove in 52 runs, good for second-best in the league. He enters the league tournament batting .318 with 14 doubles, two triples and nine home runs on the year and a team-leading 15 multi-RBI games.
Â
A native of Cordova, Tenn., Goodwin was steady at first base all season with just two errors and was on the receiving end of 32 double plays. Most of his power came against league foes as he slugged .525 with 10 doubles, a triple and five home runs with 34 RBIs.
Â
Mosley, the 2018 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, enters the Sun Belt Tournament fifth in the league batting at a .343 clip while checking in fifth with 16 doubles and eighth with 70 hits. All six of Mosley's home runs have come over the last 24 games in which he has hit safely in 20 of the 24 contests.
Â
The native of Maitland, Fla., leads Troy with 22 multi-hit games on the season and put together a streak of 33 straight games reaching base earlier this year. Troy's left fielder has four outfield assists on the year and has also stolen eight bases in 10 attempts.
Â
Troy enters the Sun Belt Tournament as the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 3 Little Rock at 8 a.m. Wednesday in the first game of the double-elimination portion of the tournament.Â
