Hattiesburg, Miss. – Troy was unable to get into an offensive groove and dropped its final non-conference baseball game of the regular season, 12-2 to Southern Miss at Pete Taylor Park on Tuesday night.

The Eagles' (33-17) starting pitcher kept the Trojans (27-26) quiet as Gabe Shepard tossed five innings with nine strikeouts – sat down five in a row from the first through third innings.

On the mound, Bay Witcher suffered the loss (0-1) as he dealt two innings giving up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

Chase Smartt led the way at the plate going a perfect 2-for-2 with two walks and his 18th double of the season. Cole Prestegard tallied a hit with the only RBI in the game for the Trojans.

Troy posted an early threat in the first inning as Rigsby Mosley led the game off with a single to left field then advanced to third off a failed pickoff attempt with no outs. The Eagles escaped the inning by striking out two batters and throwing a runner out trying to advance on the wild pitch.

The Trojans' two runs came in the ninth when Prestegard hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored pinch runner Donovan Whibbs followed by Logan Cerny scoring on a wild pitch.

After today, Smartt has played in 215 games in his career at Troy which is one game behind Adam Bryant (2008-11) who holds the record for most games played in a Troy uniform.
