Mobile, Ala. – Troy was held to just four hits on the night and suffered a tough 8-2 loss to in-state rival South Alabama in Sun Belt Conference baseball action on Thursday at Stanky Field.Â
Â
The Trojans (27-27, 14-14 Sun Belt) could not get in a rhythm against the Jaguars' (30-23, 16-12 Sun Belt) pitching as Troy was held hitless until the sixth inning.Â
Â
Cory Gill (7-3) took the loss on the mound, tossing five innings giving up five runs on six hits while tallying three strikeouts. South's starter Drake Nightengale earned his sixth win of the season pitching 7.2 innings with 11 strikeouts giving up two runs on four hits with a walk.Â
Â
At the plate, Manning Early and Reed Smith accounted for all of Troy's hits as they both racked up two hits with a double. Early scored both of the Trojans' runs and Chase Smartt drew the sole walk.Â
Â
Troy's bats were kept quiet throughout the first five innings before Early broke up the no-hitter with a double down the left field line in the sixth followed by Smith hitting an infield single to put runners on the corners with no outs.Â
Â
Rigsby Mosley capitalized on the opportunity and drove home Early with an RBI-sacrifice fly to right field.Â
Â
In the eighth inning, Early hit a one-out single to center field right before Smith doubled to left center field, scooting Early over to third. Mosley once again hit a sacrifice fly that drove home Troy's final run.Â
Â
Five of South Alabama's eight runs came off home runs as Santi Montiel hit a three-run homer in the second while Wells Davis and Dakota Dailey both hit solo home runs in the fourth and sixth inning, respectively.Â
