TROY, Alabama – For the fourth time in five seasons, Troy will play postseason basketball. The Trojans will host UAB in the first round of the 2019 Women's National Invitation Tournament Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT).
"We are looking forward to being the first team in Troy history to win a postseason game," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. "Though we didn't get the result we wanted in New Orleans (Sun Belt Conference Tournament), the team put itself in a position to get an invitation to this prestigious tournament and a chance to continue its season."
The Trojans (22-8) finished third in the Sun Belt Conference and won at least 20 games for the third time in four seasons. UAB earned a bid after a 25-6 campaign and second-place finish in the Conference USA. Troy and UAB have met 10 times previously with the Blazers holding an 8-2 advantage in the series. The teams last met on Dec. 16, 2016, an 81-77 Blazer victory.
The game will mark the first time in program history Troy has hosted a postseason game. Tickets will go on sale at 8 a.m. Tuesday, general admission tickets are $5, while students will be admitted for free.
In 2015, Troy earned a spot in the Women's Basketball Invitational, its first postseason appearance in 17 seasons. The Trojans then made back-to-back showings in the NCAA Tournament facing eventual Final Four participant Oregon State in 2016 and runner-up Mississippi State in 2017. This marks the program's first appearance in the WNIT.
Troy's 22 regular season wins were the most in program history and second-most overall behind only the 1996-97 team, which finished 23-7 and made the program's first NCAA appearance. The Trojans led the Sun Belt Conference in scoring average (82.1) and rebounding average (50.6) for the seventh consecutive season, the team ranks sixth in the nation in scoring and leads the NCAA in rebounding.
The 64-team, single-elimination WNIT consists of 32 automatic berths and 32 at-large selections, with all games played at host school sites. An automatic bid is offered to each established Division I conference to the team that finished highest during the regular season and did not receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 32 at-large bids are filled by the available at-large teams in the nation, as determined by the selection committee, regardless of conference or geographical location.
