Troy Baseball Opens Sun Belt Play with A-State

TROY, Ala. – A grueling, 30-game conference schedule initiates Friday when Troy welcomes Arkansas State to Riddle-Pace Field for a three-game set. First pitch in the opener is set for 6 p.m., followed by 3 p.m. and 1 p.m. start times on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week Levi Thomas leads the Trojans (9-8) into league play after stumbling in a couple of midweek contests Tuesday and Wednesday. Thomas – who has started every series opener in 2019 – will once again get the call on Friday with hopes to replicate his previous performance.
The sophomore was five outs away from a no-hitter, recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts and improved to 3-0 on the season with a combined shutout of UNA. Junior southpaw Grant Stewart (2-1, 4.50) will get the start in game two of the series, while Troy has not yet named a starter for Sunday's finale.
The Trojans are looking to continue a hot streak at the plate, as they have tallied double-digit hits in each of the last three games. Hunter Mercer has had a career week at the plate, going a combined 5-for-9 (.556) with a double and three RBI in the two midweek games.
Troy is racking up the doubles once again in 2019, as it currently ranks in the top 15 nationally with 38 doubles on the season – Rigsby Mosley leads the team and is sixth in the country with nine two-baggers.
SCOUTING THE RED WOLVES
A-State (11-7) heads into its conference schedule after suffering a couple of tough losses to Missouri in midweek action – the Red Wolves were outscored 5-30 in the games. Offense is the name of the game for the squad, as it has tallied 36 doubles, 18 homers and 119 runs as a team to this point in the year – Sky-Lar Culver leads the charge with 20 RBI and is batting at a .367 clip.
