TROY, Ala. – Sophomore righty Levi Thomas has been tabbed as the Community Coffee Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Â
Thomas, a native of Cullman, Ala., takes the award after carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning of his Friday night start against North Alabama. He fanned a career-high 11 batters through 7.1 innings before a UNA pinch hitter spoiled the party. Overall, he allowed just four baserunners in the outing – the lone hit, two walks and an error – en route to his third career combined shutout.
Â
The sophomore has been phenomenal in his first four starts of the 2019 season, leading Troy to a perfect 4-0 record in series openers on the year and compiling a 3-0 record of his own. Thomas ranks in the top 75 nationally with 29 strikeouts this season (second in the Sun Belt) and leads the conference with three wins. The honor is the first in the youngster's career and is the first weekly award claimed by a Troy player in 2019.
Â
QUOTABLE – TROY PITCHING COACH MATT HANCOCK
"I am very happy and proud of Levi. It is always nice when you see someone's hard work come to fruition. He had complete command of his fastball and could throw his breaking ball for a strike whenever he wanted to Friday night. He has matured into a true Friday night guy and he continues to improve. I truly believe his best days are ahead of him."
Â
The Trojans are back in action with two games at in-state rivals this week – starting with a face-off against UAB Tuesday night at Regions Field in Birmingham; first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
