TROY, Ala. – Highlighted by five first teamers, Troy indoor track and field was represented by six student-athletes on the All-Sun Belt teams, the league office announced Thursday. Tiarra Bailey, Gemma Finch, Tanner Guest, Madison Kennedy and Precious Ogba were named to the first team, while Samara Nelson earned third team honors.
Â
Troy had more first team all-conference players than any other school after sweeping the two relays at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships last Monday and Tuesday. The women's distance medley relay team – Finch, Kennedy, Bailey and Guest – set a school record on its way to claiming the championship with a run of 11:47.14. Ogba, Bailey, Finch and Kennedy then capped off the meet with a win in the women's 4x400m.
Â
Overall, Finch claimed three gold medals at the championship, winning the 800m with a school record time along with the two relay victories – Bailey finished just behind Finch in the 800m to take silver. A pair of Trojans claimed medals in the 400m dash, as Ogba took silver and Kennedy took bronze – Ogba also earned a bronze medal in the 200m dash.
Â
The Trojans earned one medal on the field side, coming from Samara Nelson – who threw the shot put 14.21 meters to finish with the bronze in the event.
Â
Quotable – Troy track and field director Marc Davis
"The women on this all-conference list worked hard and set goals all season to achieve them. We have a strong team and they have emerged as the leaders. When you talk about Gemma, Maddie, Tiarra, and Precious, you are talking about individuals who have won multiple Sun Belt Championships during their careers. They have taken the lead and individuals like Tanner and Samara are eager to follow in their footsteps to be great. I am excited to get to the outdoor season. We have a lot more work to do."
Â
Troy set a school record with a third-place finish and 81 points as a team at the conference championship meet – the Trojans tied the school record in 2018 with a fifth-place finish. The 2019 outdoor season kicks off in Hammond, La., Saturday as Troy competes in Southeastern Louisiana's Strawberry Relays.
