Troy Slips in Series Finale with Central Michigan

TROY, Alabama – Central Michigan used a four-run third inning Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field to secure a 5-2 victory over Troy and split the season-opening series at two games apiece.
The Chippewas (2-2) strung together three consecutive RBI singles in that third inning, only one of which left the infield, to jump out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back. They were able to add another in the fourth on a solo homer from Gaoshua Williams, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the ballgame.
Down but not out yet, the young Troy (2-2) ball club made it interesting late when freshman Logan Cerny drove in two runs on a no-out double in the bottom of the seventh – his first career hit.
Central Michigan was the benefactor of another outstanding starting pitching performance on opening weekend, this time from Zach Kohn (1-0). Kohn worked six solid, scoreless innings scattering three hits around four strikeouts to pick up the win. After Logan Cerny's double in the seventh, the Chippewas went to Cameron Miller (1) out of the pen and he effectively stomped out any late rally the Trojans tried to get going to earn the three-inning save.
Troy freshman Tanner Jackson continued his impressive first weekend of collegiate baseball with a 2-for-3 day at the plate that included a double and a run scored. Hunter Mercer was the only other Trojan to record two hits in the contest.
A bright spot for the Trojans was the work out of the bullpen by Will Carnley and Rush Hixon. Carnley allowed just one baserunner and struck out three batters in two innings of relief, while Hixon pitched a perfect ninth with a strikeout. Senior starter Sadler Goodwin (0-1) wore the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in six innings on the mound.

Held scoreless until the seventh inning, Troy was in danger of losing a now 95-game streak of not being shutout at Riddle-Pace Field. Florida A&M was the last team to shutout the Trojans at home on May 7, 2015.

The Trojans will hit the road for the first time in 2019, as they travel to face Southern Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss., Wednesday night at 6:30.
