TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's basketball program started the 2019-20 season in exciting fashion Tuesday night with a thrilling 101-52 victory over Fort Valley State in front of a record-breaking crowd inside Trojan Arena.
Trojan nation came out in waves on opening night to support Troy, setting a new Trojan Arena women's basketball attendance record with 2,539 fans in attendance. The new record breaks the old mark of 2,451 that was set last year against UAB in the opening round of the WNIT.
The nerves were running high for Troy in the opening quarter as the Trojans ended the first with just a 13-12 advantage. The Trojans found their groove in the second, going on a 27-8 run to blow the game wide open before closing out the first half with a buzzer-beating triple from Tyasia Moore.
Coming out of the locker room Troy was poised to build off the momentum they had created in the second quarter, extending their lead with a 20-6 run to open the third frame. The route continued into the fourth as the Trojans were keen on opening the season with 100-points.
As the clock inched closer to zero the crowd started going crazy as the scoreboard sat at 99-points. After a couple of missed free throws, Alexus Dye climbed the later for the rebound and put up a shot, just beating the buzzer, to put Troy over the century mark in the first game of the season.
Records
Troy: 1-0
Fort Valley State: 0-0 (exhibition game for FVSU)
Trojan Spotlight
Japonica James opened her senior season in style on Tuesday setting new career-highs in multiple categories. James set new career marks in points (28), steals (6), free throws made (14) and free throws attempted (21). She also added eight rebounds and a block in 20 minutes of action to her impressive opening night stat line.
Quoting Coach Rigby
On the incredible crowd
"First, I want to thank every person that was here, The Sound of the South, the cheerleaders, the sororities, the fraternities, the season ticket holders the new fans we have. This was the best time I think I've ever seen people have inside Trojan Arena at a basketball game."
On the balanced team scoring
"There are a lot of weapons and I think that's one of our best strengths. We are hard to scout and hard to focus on any one, two, three, four, five players. It could be anyone on any given night. Tonight, Japonica James broke a record. No one on our roster had scored 28 points before tonight because we share the ball a lot and she scored 28 and she probably could have scored more."
