Notes: Women's Basketball Faces First Road Test at Samford

TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's basketball program will be on the road for the first time this season on Tuesday. The Trojans will travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take on the Bulldogs of Samford with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Pete Hanna Center.

Troy enters the second week of the college basketball season with a 1-0 record. The Trojans move on from a 49-point victory over Fort Valley State last Tuesday and turn their focus to Samford. The two programs are playing for the fourth time in three seasons after playing twice in 2017-18. Troy got the best of Samford last season inside Trojan Arena snapping a three-game losing streak to the Bulldogs.

Samford enters the contest coming off a 55-60 loss at Kennesaw State on Saturday. In the contest, the Bulldogs were led by Sarah Myers who scored 14 points and Samantha Fitzgerald who added 11 points. Samford began their season last Tuesday with an 81-60 win over Montevallo. The Bulldogs have two student-athletes average double-digit points in Myers (15.5 ppg) and Charity Brown (10.0 ppg). Through two games they are averaging 68 points per game as a team and 36 boards per contest.

• Troy is coming off a 101-52 season-opening victory over Fort Valley State last Tuesday. In the contest Japonica James set new career-highs in points (28), free throws made (14), free throws attempted (21) and steals (6)
• Amber Rivers, Kate Rodgers and Alexus Dye will be playing in their hometown of Birmingham on Tuesday. Of the three Trojans returning home, only Rivers played in the last meeting against Samford in Birmingham. In the contest Rivers scored 15-points on 6-of-13 shooting with five rebounds and a steal in 26 minutes of action
• In game one Troy had nine student-athletes play at least 15 minutes. Of those nine just three played 20 minutes; James, Kayla Robinson and Janiah Sandifer. Robinson led all Trojans in minutes played at 21
• Five Trojans reached double-digit points in game one. James led the way with 28 followed by Alexus Dye (13), Tyasia Moore (12) Jasmine LeBlanc (11) and Amber Rivers (10)
• Through one week of the college basketball season Troy leads the country in steals per game (32), turnover margin (+25) and turnovers forced (+45)

Alexus Dye had an impressive debut for the Trojans last Tuesday against Fort Valley State. The junior was Troy's second-leading scorer with 13-points on 4-of-8 shooting including a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line. Dye also hauled in five rebounds, two on the offensive end with four steals and zero turnovers. Her impressive stat line in her debut came in just 19 minutes of action.
