Troy Falls to Texas State in Semifinal Action

SAN MARCOS, Texas – No. 4 Troy fell to No. 1 Texas State in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon in San Marcos. The Bobcats' physical play at the net propelled Texas State to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-18) victory over the Trojans.
Troy (22-9, 10-4 Sun Belt) doubled its win total from just a year ago with 22 on the year. The Trojans' .710 winning percentage is tied for the best in school history.
Texas State (23-8, 14-2 Sun Belt) hit .382 and recorded 15 blocks in the win over the Trojans. Halston Hillier and Ashley Guenveur led the way for the Trojans offensively with seven kills apiece. Amara Anderson tallied 23 assists for the Troy.
"It was a really tough match today," head coach Josh Lauer said. "Texas State played really well and kept the pressure on us the entire match. I was proud of our composure and felt like we kept fighting throughout the match. I'm really excited for what's next for this team."
Set One
Texas State got off to a hot start in the match picking up three early blocks while taking a quick 5-0 lead. The Bobcats extended their lead to 10 at 14-4. Emily DeWalt hit .667 and recorded three blocks in the first set to lead Texas State to a 25-14 set one victory.
Set Two
Cheyenne Hayes got things going in the second set with an ace to give Troy a 3-1 lead. The teams battled to a 6-6 tie before Texas State took a 13-8 advantage to force Troy's first timeout of the set. The Bobcats then pushed their lead to nine at 19-10 to force the Trojans' final timeout of the set. The Texas State block continued to cause problems for Troy has the Bobcats secured a 25-14 set two victory.
Set Three
Troy finally found its groove at the beginning of the third set, taking a 10-7 lead to force a Texas State timeout. Guenveur pushed the Trojans' lead to five with an ace to make the score 12-7. Texas State quickly closed the gap with a 3-1 run cut Troy's lead to two. The Bobcats eventually tied the set at 17-17 and then took a 20-18 lead with an ace. Texas State wouldn't allow Troy to score another point as the Bobcats clinched the sweep, 25-18.
