Strong Fifth Inning Propels Troy Past Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A strong fifth inning propelled Troy to a 7-3 win over Alabama State in its first fall game Friday night at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. Trojan pitchers combined four 17 strikeouts in the 12-inning game.
Levi Thomas got the start on the mound for the Trojans, striking out six batters in four innings while only giving up one hit. Orlando Ortiz-Mayr showed impressive stuff on the mound as well, tossing three perfect innings and striking out seven of the nine batters he faced.
The Trojans got on the board in the third inning after Kyle Mock drove in Hunter Mercer for Troy's first run of the game.
The bats came alive in the fifth inning when Rigsby Mosley drilled a triple to left field to score Mercer and Austin Garofalo. Mock then singled to left field to bring Mosley home. The freshman then stole second and reached third on an error. Drew Frederic hit a SAC fly to left field to score Mock, Troy's fourth run of the inning.
Logan Cerny hit a triple of his own to open up the seventh inning for the Trojans. Mosley followed with his third RBI of the game, a double to bring Cerny home. With two outs in the inning, Caleb Bartolero reached on an error by the third baseman that also scored Mosely.
Overall, Troy racked up nine hits in a solid fall outing. The Trojans return to action with an intrasquad scrimmage Sunday at 1 p.m.
