Little Rock, Ark. – Troy men's basketball senior Jordon Varnado has earned a spot on the 2018-19 Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List as announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the nation's top mid-major player in Division I College Basketball. Lou Henson coached 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.
The Brownsville, Tenn., native leads the Trojans this season averaging 18.0 points per game which is ninth in the Sun Belt Conference while also grabbing 7.3 rebounds per contest.
In his last game against Appalachian State, Varnado posted a game-high 27 points on 8-of-12 (66 percent) shooting from the field including a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Varnado added eight rebounds, a season-high six assists, a pair of blocks and a steal to his stat line.
The senior's best game this season came against UAB on Dec. 21 when Varnado posted a career-high 32 points on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc alongside seven rebounds and three assists. So far this season, Varnado has posted six 20-point games and three double doubles.
In addition to this watch list, the three-time All-Sun Belt selection was named to the Preseason Julius Erving Award Watch List and was selected to the Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team.
The 2019 Lou Henson Award will be presented at the College Insider awards event in April at the site of the men's division I national championship in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
