TROY, Alabama – For the second straight game, Troy erased a double-digit deficit and won on its home floor as the Trojans dispatched Arkansas State, 87-79, in Trojan Arena Saturday.
Arkansas State (8-7, 3-1 SBC) along with Troy (13-2, 4-0) entered the game as one of three teams tied for the Sun Belt lead. When the dust settled on Saturday's action, only Troy remained as undefeated in league play. The win stretched the team's winning streak to seven games.
Troy's 13-2 start matches the 1991-92 squad for the best in program history.
The Trojans shot just 30.8 percent (12-39) and at one point found themselves in a 28-17 second quarter hole. The Red Wolves knocked down 6-of-12 shots from 3-point range in the first half while Troy struggled with turnovers throughout.
Entering the third quarter trailing, 38-30, Troy opened the half on a 26-11 run and outscored ASU 57-41 in the half.
Coming off a disappointing two-point performance on Thursday against Little Rock, Amber Rivers was nearly unstoppable making 9-of-14 shots from the field and 4-of-6 on opportunities from 3-point. The junior finished with 22 points and six rebounds.
Rivers was one of four Trojans to finish in double figures as Kayla Robinson had 14 points to go along with eight assists and Kate Rodgers had 11 including the first seven points of the second half. Harriet Winchester, typically a major 3-point threat, did not attempt a shot from range, but was 5-of-8 inside the arc and had 12 points in the game.
Arkansas State's Akasha Westbrook ended with a team-high 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
