SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – The Troy men's basketball team went on a tour of San Jose and played its last game of the trip against Laurentian University on Sunday.
The team was able to enter into one of the biggest soccer stadiums in Costa Rica, ventured to downtown San Jose to feed pigeons and view historical buildings then wrapped up the tour with a visit to the gift shops.
"The tour today was really cool," sophomore Malik Burnett. "We fed some pigeons which was cool because one landed on my head and also one ate out of my hand. We visited a gift shop which allowed us to buy some souvenirs and gifts. The city is beautiful."
After the tour, the team faced off against Laurentian University and grinded out a tough 79-77 victory to complete the 3-0 trip. Senior Jordon Varnado led the Trojans with 21 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and a block. Sophomore Javan Johnson added 16 points and five boards. Senior B.J. Miller and sophomore Darian Adams tallied 13 points apiece.
"It was a tough game today," Burnett said. "We played hard and fought through some adversity. Through it all, we stuck together as a team and grinded out the victory. Today has been a successful day."
QUOTING COACH CUNNINGHAM
"Today was another long but very enjoyable day," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "I thought the city tour was an impressive one. We got to see somethings that none of us knew about Costa Rica. It was a great time at the market with all the players doing some bartering with the store owners."
"We knew this game was going to be tough since it was basically our third game in two days. Our guys were worn out physically and mentally, but we stepped up. Laurentian had their best player back who didn't play Friday night and it was a heck of a game, like a Sun Belt game in February. I was really impressed with the way we stuck together today. B.J. was in foul trouble so it was tough not having our leader on the court. Everybody is feeling good now about going 3-0 and that was the plan."
