SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – On Saturday, the Troy men's basketball team visited La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park in the morning and closed out the day with a game against the Costa Rica International team.
The La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park is the number one most visited privately owned ecological attraction in Costa Rica which features hiking, the most famous waterfalls in Costa Rica, rescued wildlife preserve with over 100 species of animals, and an environmental education program.
"Today was a great experience at the La Paz Waterfall," sophomore Darian Adams said. "Seen a bunch of different species and animals which was very cool."
The Trojans played a night game at 8 p.m. central standard time against the Costa Rica International team, winning the game, 90-45. Freshman Xavier Williams led all scorers with 18 points alongside seven rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore Javan Johnson tallied 14 points with two boards and an assist while senior Alex Hicks added a double-double in 10 points and 10 rebounds with an assist and a steal.
"They game was very good," Adams said. "Everyone played together and played well, and this game showed that our team chemistry is good as well as our defense, so this should be a fun year."
QUOTING COACH CUNNINGHAM
"It was a long day but also very enjoyable," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "I thought the waterfall was a terrific experience, it was a pleasant surprise to see how much interest the guys showed in the trip. They were interacting with the tour guide and asking a lot of great questions. The team really got excited at the bottom of the waterfall."
"We got to play against a bunch of older guys and I think our youth and athleticism just wore them out. We had a couple of freshmen that really looked good in Williams and KJ Simon, and I'm just excited in our young guys in our program this year. We have a real test tomorrow with playing our third game in less than 72 hours."
