TROY, Ala. – Troy was back in pads on Monday for the first time since Saturday's opening scrimmage of camp. The Trojans hit the practice fields behind Trojan Arena for two hours in the morning heat and head coach Neal Brown was not pleased with his team's effort on both sides of the football.
Â
"We had a medium-type practice today and today wasn't very good," Brown said. "I thought we were average on defense. If we are average on defense, we're going to really struggle early in the year. Three out of the first four weeks of the season we play an offense that is capable of putting up big numbers with some of the best play callers and some of the best systems. We were just average today (on defense).
Â
"On offense, we didn't even scrape that. It was pathetic at every level. Quarterbacks had no energy, they walked around and showed no leadership. Running backs, I'm not sure we got a run that broke the line of scrimmage in anything other than inside drills. Receivers, we dropped a bunch of balls and offensive line we gave up more sacks today than probably every other practice combined. I thought it was really bad on offense and extremely average defensively."
Â
The Trojans will have one more chance to redeem themselves in a full camp setting as Tuesday's practice will mark Troy's final workout before classes begin across campus on Wednesday.
Â
As position battles begin to take shape on both sides of the football, Brown and the coaching staff had a chance to breakdown the film from Saturday's scrimmage to get a better idea of where the Trojans stand with No. 22 Boise State coming to town in less than three weeks.
Â
"Offensively I thought we did not some nice things, defensively I thought we have to tackle better (in the scrimmage)," Brown said. "Some of that is to be expected because it was the first time in fall camp we've tackled to the ground – we missed some opportunities in the spring because we were so beat up. (We) missed some tackles and struggled to get lined up. Offensively, ran the ball better than we did at any point during the spring which was critical. Both quarterbacks did well and did some things with their feet. We hit some big balls over the top which we're going to need to."
