BLOOMINGTON – A pair of Troy track and field freshmen, Jared Hayes and Precious Ogba, competed at the USA Junior National Championships hosted by Indiana University this past weekend.
Hayes, the 2018 Sun Belt Men's Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, ran the 200-meter preliminary round in 20.82 seconds to qualify for the finals. He finished fourth overall in the event and will represent the United States at the Junior World Championships in Finland.
The 2018 Sun Belt Women's Freshman of the Year, Ogba competed in the 400-meter dash and finished with a 54.77-second time – good enough for 11th in the event.
The competition will continue for Hayes in Tampere, Finland, on July 10-15 for the 2018 World U20 Championships in Athletics – the 200-meter heats and semifinals will take place on July 12 with the finals on the following day.
Quotable - Troy Head Coach Marc Davis
"Jared and Precious had great seasons as freshmen. They didn't use being young as an excuse to waste opportunities. They seized them and competed hard every week. While Precious can now go and get some much needed rest, Jared's season continues on. He will be representing the USA at the World Junior Championships in Finland. I am proud of both of them, Coach Radlin and everyone else on staff who had a hand in making these athletes great and putting Troy on the map on the National and World level once again."
