Troy’s Annie Willis Named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, Three Trojans Named All-Sun Belt

NEW ORLEANS - Troy ace Annie Willis was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year in addition to taking home All-Sun Belt First Team honors, while sophomore infielders Katie Webb and Logan Calhoun earned All-Sun Belt Second Team honors, the league office announced on Tuesday.
"I am extremely proud of Annie, Logan and Katie," head coach Beth Mullins said. "They have been very consistent all year for this team and deserve the All-Sun Belt honors. Everyone on our team has done a great job of doing her part and they have all helped these three be as successful as they have been."
Willis, a native of Huntsville, Ala., led the Troy pitching staff with a 2.44 ERA and a 16-7 record. She recorded 112 strikeouts and allowed just 123 hits in 149.1 innings of work, which ranked second in the Sun Belt. Her 60 runs allowed and 52 earned runs allowed both rank her third in the league in the categories.
Willis has been awarded Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors twice this season after her standout performances at the Diamond 9 Classic in Orlando, Fla., and in Troy's series win over No. 21 Texas State.
She is the first Trojan to receive Freshman of the Year honors since Ashlyn Williams in 2008.
Webb, Troy's everyday first baseman, leads the Trojans in most offensive categories with a .341 average, 60 hits, and 37 RBIs – her RBI tally ranks fourth in the league. Troy leads the conference with 71 doubles as Webb and Calhoun have combined for 27 with Webb's 14 doubles topping the Sun Belt. Webb, a sophomore, has recorded 18 multi-hit games and four three-hit games this year. Defensively, the Salem, Ala., native has fielded 20 double plays, placing her second in the Sun Belt.
Calhoun's 44 runs pace the Trojans and rank her second in the league and she is right behind Webb with 59 hits. The sophomore has also recorded one triple and two home runs with a slugging percentage of .442. Calhoun put together a 17-game hitting streak during the course of the season and her 17 stolen bases lead the Trojans while tying her for third in the conference. She stole a league-high three bases in Troy's victory over Appalachian State.
Troy earned the No. 5 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and will face No. 8 ULM on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in a single-elimination game at Lamson Park in Lafayette, La. The winner advances to the double-elimination portion of the tournament and would play UT Arlington at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
