TROY, Alabama – Troy baseball kicks off its final home stand of the 2018 campaign with a visit from in-state foe, 24th-ranked Auburn Tuesday night at Riddle-Pace Field; first pitch is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Â
Coming down the stretch of what has been an outstanding season, the Trojans (35-17) are poised to make some postseason noise with a strong finish this week. Troy currently is the top batting (.291 BA) and top pitching (3.85 ERA) team in the Sun Belt Conference.
Â
Entering the week, Troy holds an RPI ranking of 43rd – up one spot since last week thanks to a three-game sweep at ULM this past weekend.
Â
The Trojans finished off their second conference road sweep of the year sparked by a stellar week for senior Joey Denison. Along with Wednesday night's performance at the plate, Denison was 11-for-15 (.733) with nine RBIs, six runs, four walks, two doubles and two stolen bases in the four games.
Â
Denison and Matt Sanders hold firm to the league's top two spots in batting, with a .401 and a .364 average, respectively. Sanders, who still leads the country in runs scored, is now at 74 for the season and is one shy of tying the school's single-season runs record.
Â
On the mound, the Trojans will turn to sophomore southpaw Max Newton (2-0, 2.08) to make his first start in two weeks. In 2017, Newton made just his second career start and earned the win at (then) No. 5 Auburn with five solid innings on the bump.
Â
No. 24 Auburn (35-17) was swept by No. 5 Ole Miss last weekend but is still ranked 12th in the RPI. The Trojans and Tigers met earlier in the season, with Auburn coming out on top, 6-5, at Plainsman Park.
Â
Riddle-Pace Field will host the two teams for the first time since the 2013 season – Troy won 10-2 – and it's the first visit from an SEC school since the Trojans walked-off Alabama in 2017.
Â
Promotions
Youth Baseball Night - $5 tickets for all youth baseball players and their families by purchasing tickets in advance. Players wearing their jerseys can join the Trojans on the field for the national anthem prior to the game.
