NEW ORLEANS, La. – After winning for the fifth-straight time in the Sun Belt Tournament following a 69-62 win over South Alabama in the first round on Wednesday, Troy will regroup to take on second-seeded Georgia State on Friday at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
The win by Troy (16-16) marked the first time in school history the Trojans beat South Alabama three times in a season with two of the wins coming by 15 or more. A win against Georgia State would also be the first time Troy would earn three victories against the Panthers in one season.
In the two matchups this season, Troy has won in vastly different fashions. On New Year's Eve, Troy stormed back from 19 down at home to knock off Georgia State (20-11) in a game in which B.J. Miller had arguably the highlight of the season with a one-handed dunk that landed him at No. 6 on the final SportsCenter Top 10 Plays of the year.
Troy's second victory over Georgia State came just a week ago as the Trojans dominated the second half with a 45-28 scoring differential. Jordon Varnado poured in 26 in that game as the forward has scored 20 or more in four-straight games and six of his past eight.
This will be the second-straight season these two teams will meet in the Sun Belt Tournament after Troy erased a 15-point deficit to earn a berth in the Sun Belt Championship. Wesley Person scored all 16 of his points in the second half en route to being named the Sun Belt Tournament Most Outstanding Player a day later.
