TROY, Alabama – Troy baseball will hit the road for a midweek meeting with in-state foe Samford at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Joe Lee Griffin Field in Birmingham.
The matchup will mark the 64th all-time meeting between the Trojans (7-5) and the Bulldogs (6-6), making it the third-longest active rivalry for Troy – trails only Jacksonville State (141 games) and South Alabama (84 games).
Troy will enter the midweek off a big series win over a highly-touted offensive team in Tennessee Tech, taking the set two games to one.
The Trojans fought fire with fire by putting on a show at the plate in their own rights, led by Joey Denison. The senior drove in 10 runs in the series, including a six-RBI night in the opener – a career-high and the most in a game by a Troy player since David Hall in 2014. Denison currently ranks 12th nationally with 19 runs driven in on the season and 24th in RBIs per game (1.58).
Head coach Mark Smartt will call on RHP Rush Hixon (1-1, 4.50) for the start on the mound. Hixon picked up a no-decision last Tuesday in the win over UAB after working five innings and allowing only two runs – one earned – around three strikeouts.
Samford is led offensively by Max Pinto, who is batting at a .385 clip with three doubles on the year. The Bulldogs dropped 2-of-3 at Kennesaw State this past weekend.
