Troy Takes Thriller Over Tennessee Tech
3/4/2018 6:20:00 PM | Baseball
Troy (7-5) saw itself down 10-6 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh before rallying for six runs in the frame.
Joey Denison started the two-out rally with an RBI double down the right field line – the run capped off Denison's 10-RBI series and was his third in the game. The senior finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the game to lead the Trojan bats.
Two batters later, Drew Frederic launched his first career homer, a three-run shot to tie the game at 10 – he drove in a career-high four runs in the game. Rigsby Mosley capped off the six-run inning with a two-RBI single up the middle.
This all came after Tennessee Tech (6-4) scored nine unanswered after trailing 6-1 in the sixth, with the bulk coming in an eight-run seventh inning. Nick Osborne, yesterday's starting pitcher for the Golden Eagles, gave them the lead with a two-out grand slam.
The Trojans took an early 3-0 lead in the first, thanks in part to Matt Sanders' RBI triple which moved him into a tie for second in school history with eight career triples. The rip extended his hitting streak to 20 games dating back to May 12, 2017.
Only one day removed from suffering a loss, CJ Carter (3-1) earned the win after working 1.2 innings of relief, fanning one and holding the nation's second-best scoring offense to just one hit.
Alex Hursey (1-2) was saddled with the loss for Tennessee Tech after giving up a run, despite not allowing a hit in the bottom of the eighth – the Golden Eagles used eight different pitchers in the matchup.
Moment That Mattered
A few minutes after Tennessee Tech scored eight runs to take a four-run lead in the seventh inning, sophomore Drew Frederic stepped to the plate with two on and two outs down 10-7. Frederic squared up a two-strike fastball and deposited it over the scoreboard to tie the game and record his first career home run.
Quotable – Troy head coach Mark Smartt
"What can you say about a game like that? I was really proud of our team, they hit some adversity and hung in there to take the lead back. We showed the desire and the will to win today. It's an important win because it gives us the confidence that we can beat anybody else on our schedule this season."
Players
"This win is big for us," winning pitcher CJ Carter said. "We know we're a good team. Even when we were down four, none of us were pressing and we were just ready to come back and score some runs."
"I was telling myself, 'I'm not going to strike out'," sophomore Drew Frederic answered about his three-run homer. "He ended up throwing me one right down the middle, I got pretty lucky and got my first homer."
"A big thing we preach is two-out RBIs," senior leader Joey Denison said. "It's a momentum killer for the other team and brings momentum to your side. I have to give credit to the guys getting on base in front of me because you can't get 10 RBIs in a series without people on in front of you."

The seventh inning of Sunday's game lasted 70 minutes and featured 14 runs and 114 pitches from six different pitchers.
Noteworthy
• With a first-inning triple, Matt Sanders moved into a tie for second in Troy history with eight career triples. It also extended his career-long hitting streak to 20 games.
• The Trojans pulled off a double steal in the first – Joey Denison was able to swipe home on the play. The last Troy player to steal home was now volunteer assistant Peyton Fuller on March 29, 2015 (also a part of a double steal).
• Troy allowed eight runs in the top of the seventh – the first time since 2015 that it has allowed eight in one frame.
• Joey Denison went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the game, taking his weekend RBI total to 10 – the senior leads Troy with 19 on the season.
• Matt Sanders scored four runs on Sunday to add to his run scoring totals. Sanders has scored 21 runs in 2018 after coming into the series ranked eighth nationally in the category.
• The victory marked Troy's 13th last at-bat win in the Mark Smartt era – the Trojans improved to 17-16 in one-run games over that same time frame.
