STATESBORO, Ga. – With plenty left to still be decided in the Sun Belt standings, Troy will close out the regular season on Saturday at Georgia State at 5 p.m. as the Trojans look to finish the regular season with a winning record for the second-straight season.
Â
The opportunity for a winning record came after Troy (15-15, 9-8) had a convincing 83-70 victory at Georgia State on Thursday. Down four at the break, the Trojans went on a 24-8 run in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to stymy any chance of the Panthers rallying at home.
Â
With the win, Troy kept hope alive at a potential top-four seed and first-round bye in next week's Sun Belt Tournament. A loss by both UTA (Friday at Texas State) and ULM (Saturday vs. Arkansas State) would vault Troy above both to secure the fourth seed.
Â
Jordon Varnado has been a force lately as the forward has scored 23 or more in four of his past six games while having a career-high 13 rebounds in that same span. Troy's frontcourt game saw Varnado (26 points) and Alex Hicks (12 points, 11 rebounds) wear Georgia State down on Thursday as the Trojans attempted 26 free throws and won the rebounding battle 40-30.
Â
Georgia Southern (19-11, 9-7) won the first matchup 86-80 between the two teams in the first game of Sun Belt play on Dec. 29. In Trojan Arena. After a three-game losing streak, the Eagles have won three of the past four following an 81-74 victory against South Alabama on Thursday.
