Troy Splits Midweek Doubleheader at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi- Troy posted 21 hits on the night as the Trojans (15-9) split the doubleheader against Southern Miss on Thursday. Troy won the first game 8-5, but narrowly fell in game two 6-5 as the Golden Eagles picked up the win.
Game one: Troy 8, Southern Miss 5
Troy's 12 hits and four doubles lifted the Trojans past the Golden Eagles 8-5 in game one. Hope Hernandez went 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Logan Calhoun, Katie Webb and Stephanie Snyder all delivered two RBI.
The Golden Eagles struck early with a lead off double, bunt single and a two-RBI double before the Trojans could record the first out. A sacrifice fly gave Southern Miss a 3-0 lead before a 4-3 putout ended the inning.
The bats started rolling for Troy in the third with a lead-off single from Erica Davis. A sacrifice bunt from Hope Hernandez advanced Davis to third and an RBI single from Calhoun drove her home. Back-to-back singles from Taylor Corbett and Katie Webb scored Calhoun as the Trojans pulled within one.
Snyder kept the momentum going with a double up the middle bringing home both runners as Troy took a 4-3 lead.
The Golden Eagles plated another run to tie the game in the bottom half of the third, but Troy got out of the inning with no further damage done.
After two scoreless innings on both sides, the Trojans came back firing in the sixth. Kaylee Hussey got the ball rolling with a double and Hernandez followed with an RBI-single scoring Riddick. Calhoun posted her second hit of the day with a double to centerfield, bringing Hernandez home. A hard hit single from Corbett, brought Calhoun home from second as the Trojans took a 7-4 lead. Webb used the momentum to drive a double to the fence, allowing Corbett to get across the plate for the Trojans' last run of the game.
Claire Graves earned her eighth start in the circle, but was relieved by freshman Annie Willis in the top of the fourth inning. Willis took delivered two strikeouts and picked up her sixth win of the season.
Game two: Troy 5, Southern Miss 6
Calhoun blasted her second home run of the season, but that wasn't quite enough as the Golden Eagles defeated Troy 6-5 in game two of the night.
Troy got on the board first as Calhoun led off with a single and a sacrifice bunt advanced her to third. She stepped across the plate off an RBI-single from Webb giving Troy a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
In the home half of the third, Troy got stuck in a jam loading the bases with no outs as a lead-off triple gave the Golden Eagles some momentum. A sacrifice fly allowed the first run of the inning to score, followed by a two-RBI double as Southern Miss took a 3-1 lead before Troy could shut them down.
Troy answered back with an RBI-single from Bailey Taylor that allowed Kyndal Riddick to score from second to tie us up at 3-3. Neither team could plate a run in the fourth, but a solo home run from Calhoun, her second of the year, gave Troy a 4-3 lead heading into the sixth.
The Trojans rallied in the seventh as Corbett reached on a fielding error and made it al; the way the third bas eon a bad throw. Brooke Echols entered to run as Webb hit an RBI-single scoring Echols to put Troy within one.
Snyder picked up a base hit to get two runners on for Troy with just one out. Kayler got thrown out, but advanced the runners into scoring position, but a ground ball ended the scoring opportunity.
Peyton Glover got the start in the circle, and threw 5.1 innings before Kynsley Rae Blasingame made her fourth appearance to close out the game. The loss moved Glover to 5-2 on the season.
