TROY, Ala. – Wesley Person became the first player in Troy history to score 2,000 points in a career as he notched 17 points to help lead Troy to a 73-67 victory over ULM on Saturday in Trojan Arena.
With 6:40 remaining, Alex Hicks grabbed an offensive rebound and dished out to Person, who fittingly broke the 2,000 point plateau with an open 3-pointer from the right corner.
That three—followed by a Person layup and Hicks dunk in the next minute of play—gave the Trojans (14-15, 8-8) the biggest lead of the day at 62-51 with 4:50 left. Despite the double-digit lead, ULM (14-13, 8-8) had no intentions of rolling over on Troy's Senior Day.
The Warhawks—winners of seven of the past eight coming in—went on a 11-4 run to cut Troy's lead down to 66-63 at the 1:46 mark. Needing a basket for some breathing room, B.J. Miller banked a three in from the top of the key as the shot clock went off.
Miller came up clutch again as he hit two free throws with 39 seconds to play after ULM missed a last-chance 3-pointer. The win gave Troy a 9-4 record in Trojan Arena for the season.
QUOTABLE
"It was a huge win for our team for a number of reasons," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "ULM came in here winners of seven of their past eight games; they've been the hottest team in the league. We had to have a win to stay alive in the Sun Belt standings. I'm proud of the guys for coming through.
"Wesley (Person) getting 2,000 points is an incredible accomplishment. It speaks to the consistency he's had since the day he walked in here. He had a professional mindset, knew how to practice and knew how to prepare. You can't imagine how many boxes he checks off. He's had an amazing career."
UP NEXT
Troy will finish the season on the road with games at Georgia State on March 1 and Georgia Southern on March 3.

• After being beaten by 20 points in the paint the past three games, the Trojans responded on Saturday with a 30-20 advantage down low.
• Person became just the seventh player in Sun Belt history to score 2,000 or more points.
