TROY, Alabama – Troy senior shortstop Matt Sanders has been tabbed the Sun Belt Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Sanders receives the award after hitting .500 (8-for-16) with three home runs, eight runs scored and six RBIs in the season opening series against UT Martin. He currently leads the nation in homers and runs, while ranking in the top 8 in runs per game, total bases and hits.
Â
The Madison, Alabama-native turned in two, three-hit performances in the four games and drove in at least one run in each. Sanders also extended his career-long hitting streak to 13 games and has already matched his home run total from all of last season.
Â
The senior blasted a two-run homer in the 14-2 season-opening rout of the Skyhawks, and followed with a 3-for-5 performance and another home run in game two of the series. He wrapped up the weekend with yet another 3-for-5 day at the plate and his third round-tripper of the series.
Â
Quotable – Troy head coach Mark Smartt
"Matt is off to a great start and honestly I am not surprised. He had an outstanding fall and pre-season swinging the bat and carried that success into the first four games. His leadership and experience are important to our team and I believe he will continue to have success throughout his senior season."
Â
Troy will look to continue its early success with a short trip up the road to Auburn on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch between the in-state foes is set for 4 p.m.
