Troy Pair Named Sun Belt Players of the Week

TROY, Ala. – Troy secured a big road win on Saturday in its pursuit of a berth in the inaugural Sun Belt Championship Game and a pair of Trojans are reaping the rewards from their performances against Georgia Southern with Sun Belt Player of the Week honors on Monday.

Defensive end Antione Barker was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week and Tyler Sumpter earned his third Sun Belt Special Teams Player of the Week honor and second in a row.

Barker, a native of Pensacola, Fla., finished with a pair of sacks and three tackles for a loss as he led a bruising Troy defense that stymied Georgia Southern's high-powered option attack all day; Barker just missed a third sack by a half yard.

The Trojans limited the Eagles to just 101Â rushing yards which was 159.4 yards below their season average. Troy held Georgia Southern to just 161 yards over the final three quarters of play and recorded nine total tackles for loss in the game.

Sumpter, a native of Hoover, Ala., played a key role in three different special teams areas in Troy's win over Georgia Southern. Sumpter averaged 57.0 yards on two punts, including a booming 65-yard punt, drilled a pair of field goals (45 yards, 42 yards) and was clean on all three of his extra point attempts.

Troy hosts Texas State on Saturday at The Vet where the Trojans will honor 15 seniors prior to the game. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
