TROY, Alabama – A sixth Sun Belt Conference championship, a school-FBS record 11 wins, a New Orleans Bowl title and a marquee victory at LSU all were the catalyst for Troy breaking Sun Belt postseason thresholds as the final polls of the 2017 season were released Monday.
Â
USA Today ranked Troy at No. 18 in its final College Football 1-130 – the Trojans were the third-highest ranked Group of Five team (UCF & Boise State) and finished ahead of notable teams such as LSU (21), NC State (24), Virginia Tech (25), Washington State (26), South Carolina (27) and Mississippi State (32).
Â
"We challenged our players and staff to be UNCOMMON this season, and there is no doubt that is what this group accomplished," head coach Neal Brown said. "When we all have a chance to slow down, step back and look and what this team has achieved, everyone associated with the program should be extremely proud of the mark that this year's team has left on Troy history."
Â
Peter Wolfe's computer rating system, which is recognized by the NCAA as an official poll, tabbed Troy as the No. 24 team in the country – an 11-position improvement following its 50-30 victory over North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl.
Â
The two human polls also made history as Troy finished as the highest-ranked team in Sun Belt history in both polls. The Trojans totaled 40 points in the Coaches Poll, good for 27th position, while totaling 14 points in the AP Poll, good for 31st.
Â
Troy has won 22 of its last 27 games dating back to 2015 season and the Trojans' .846 winning percent this season ranked as the eight-best in the country. Troy's schedule featured seven bowl teams, and the Trojans posted a 6-1 mark in those games.
Â
In what will be one of the most anticipated season openers in Troy history, the Trojans open the 2018 season against Boise State on Sept. 1 in the newly renovated Veterans Memorial Stadium. Troy will carry the nation's fourth-longest active winning streak of seven games into the contest against Boise State.
