1/6/2018 5:27:00 PM | Basketball (W)
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Troy women's basketball team made it an interesting finish but could not overcome a 21-point deficit as Texas State came away with an 83-75 win on Saturday in Strahan Coliseum.
The Trojans trailed by 21 points, 77-56, with 6:51 left in the game when an Amber Rivers' layup spurred a 15-2 Troy run cutting the deficit to eight, 79-71. However, with just 21 second remaining a trio of Taeler Deer free throws iced the game for the Bobcats.
Troy (7-8, 2-2 Sun Belt) jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but a 12-0 Texas State run and an 0-for-9 Trojan drought quickly turned the game upside down. Bobcat ace Toshua Leavitt was red-hot making all five of her 3-point attempts in the first half leading Texas State (10-5, 3-1) to a six-point first half lead, 38-32.
Leavitt wasn't finished after just 20 minutes. The senior hit seven 3-pointers in the game and finished with 23 points, tied with Deer for the team lead. In total, four Bobcats scored in double digits paced by Ericka May's 15-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Rivers and Dajia Williams each posted double-double for the Trojans. Rivers went for 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Williams added 12 points and 10 boards. Janiah Sandifer turned in her second double-figure performance of the season with 13 points.
The teams shot nearly the same from the field (Troy – 29-75, 38.7 percent; Texas State – 27-71, 38 percent), but it was the 13 Texas State 3-pointers that proved to be the difference. The Trojans shot just 4-of-18 from range on the day.
