SAN MARCOS, Texas – B.J. Miller had a chance to steal a road victory on Saturday, but his layup as time expired just barely fell off the mark as Troy fell 57-56 to Texas State.
The Trojans (7-10, 1-3) trailed for the majority of the second half before a turnover by Nijal Pearson with 22 seconds left allowed Miller to go sprinting down the court. He hit a layup while being fouled then calmly sank both free throws to put Troy on top 56-55.
On the ensuing possession, it looked as if the Bobcats (10-7, 3-1) shot at redemption would fall short as Pearson's 3-pointer with seven seconds left was off, but Alex Peacock grabbed the offensive rebound then made his only basket of the second half for the 57-56 lead.
Troy's last chance couldn't have been scripted better as Miller took the inbound then took off toward the basket. The junior weaved through defenders then got a clear look right at the rim, but his shot bounced off the back iron as the buzzer sounded.
Shooting proved to be the issue for the Trojans as Troy went more than 12 minutes in the second half without a basket. Miller's basket with 22 seconds left ended an 0-16 slump from the field.
QUOTABLE
"We told B.J. (Miller) after the game that there probably are not 10 guys in the country that can go from one end of the floor to the other in four seconds and he's certainly one of them," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "He did a tremendous job just to get it there.
"We didn't lose the game on that play. There are a lot of things that happened. You hate to give up that offensive rebound (on Texas State's final possession.) That's where we got beat. We forced a bad shot on that last possession and Peacock beat us for an offensive rebound. That's where the game was lost."
UP NEXT
There will be just one game this week as Troy travels to Mobile to face rival South Alabama on Saturday.
