TROY, Alabama – Wesley Person was selected as a candidate for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes athletes who have displayed excellence in the community, classroom, character and competition.
Â
"We're really proud of Wes and excited about his nomination for such an outstanding award," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "The Senior CLASS Award recognizes student-athletes who exhibit a high level of basketball ability and character throughout their college careers and he's definitely excelled in both areas since he arrived at Troy.
Â
"This nomination is a testament to how well he was raised at home and his family deserves a lot of credit on this one."
Â
The senior was one of 60 men's and women's NCAA basketball players who were chosen as players considered the total student-athlete and who use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their community.
Â
Throughout his four years at Troy, Person has volunteered extensively in the community with frequent visits to the Boys & Girls Club of Troy and local schools to spend time with the students.
Â
Person's leadership propelled the Trojans to the program's second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance last season, the largest wins turnaround in school history and the third-most Sun Belt wins in team history.
Â
The Brantley, Ala. native has his name etched throughout the Troy record book as this season he became both the all-time leader in 3-pointers in Troy history and the all-time leading scorer since the Trojans transitioned to Division I.
Â
He currently sits just seven threes shy of breaking the Sun Belt record for made 3-pointers and is the third-highest scorer in the conference at 21.1 points per game, nearly seven points higher than his career average.
Â
Even with stellar numbers throughout his career, Person has upped his game to a new level in his final season as he currently has career marks in points per game, field goal percentage, 3-point percentage and free throw percentage.
Â
The list of candidates will be narrowed to 10 in February. From there, a ballot system will be distributed in a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans for one candidate to be chosen as the winner.
Â
Troy is currently on the first conference road trip of the season and will take on UT Arlington on Thursday and Texas State on Saturday. For more information on Troy men's basketball, follow the team on social media at @TroyMensHoops or visit TroyTrojans.com.
