TROY, Ala. – After rallying from 19 down to pick up the first Sun Belt win of the season, Troy will look to keep the momentum going with the first road conference game on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. at UT Arlington.
The Trojans (7-8, 1-1) just narrowly avoided a clean sweep over the weekend to start off 2-0. In Jordon Varnado's return from a foot injury Friday against Georgia Southern, Troy fell victim to a shooting slump in the second half in the 86-80 loss.
Any bad vibes from that game appeared to linger against Georgia State on Sunday before the Trojans reeled off one of the most remarkable victories in Trojan Arena history to climb back within one game of .500 on the year.
Varnado has shown little rust after his seven-game absence after he led all Troy scorers with 15 points against Georgia State after posting 18 against Georgia Southern. Alex Hicks also showed up against the Panthers as he posted a career-high 14 rebounds to go with 14 points for his fourth double-double this season.
UT Arlington was the overwhelming favorite to win the Sun Belt in the preseason poll with nine first-place votes, but the Mavericks (9-6, 0-2) fell 90-65 to Coastal Carolina to open conference play and then dropped a 80-76 contest to Appalachian State on Sunday.
