ATHENS, Georgia – Thanks to a blistering start, the Troy women's golf team climbed a spot on the leaderboard into 16th place following Tuesday's second round of the NCAA Athens Regional at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
A pair of Trojans made the turn in the red as Gabi Oubre' carded five birdies and was 4-under after nine holes, while Fátima Fernández Cano had three birdies and made the turn at 1-under.
Troy shot 10-over as a team, which was a 17-shot improved from its opening round on Monday. Oubre' and Cano both shaved 10 shots off their opening round totals, while Lindsey Harrison improved her card by six shots. The Trojans carded 13 birdies as a unit over the first nine holes after a collective eight birdies the entire first round.
Oubre' quickly raced out to 4-under with birdies on four of her first six holes. Following a bogey on No. 17, she birdied No. 18 to get back to 4-under at the turn. An eventful back nine saw her get back to even over the first four holes, but a birdie on No. 5 put her back in the red. Oubre' settled with a 1-over 73 on the day and is tied for 77th place overall.
Cano fired the best round of the day for the Trojans with an even 72 to climb into a tie for 64th position, a 21-spot jump following Monday's opening round. She added a birdied and a pair of bogeys after making the turn to close out her day with four of each.
Becca Horner leads the Trojans at 8-over through 36 holes after carding one birdie en route to a 5-over 77 on Tuesday; she is tied for 46th place overall. Bianca Lohbauer had a pair of birdies before the turn and is tied for 56th place after shooting 5-over on the day, while Harrison is tied for 82nd after a round of 4-over par with three birdies.
Top-seeded Alabama moved into the lead with a 4-under 284 in Tuesday's round, while first-round leader and No. 14 seed Michigan State slipped into third place. The top six teams and top individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships.
