DOTHAN, Ala. – It was a bit too close for comfort at times, but Troy was able to get past Milligan on Thursday in the Dothan Civic Center 80-67 to conclude non-conference play with a victory.
Â
The Trojans (6-7) had trouble finding a consistent scoring touch throughout the night with various scoreless stretches throughout. Though Troy often broke through Milligan's (4-10) defense, the baskets did not seem to want to fall.
Â
Free throws proved to be the difference in the outcome as the Trojans got to the line all game and made them all game at a 24-30 (80 percent) clip while the Buffaloes shot just three free throws and made just eight.
Â
It took the duo of Wesley Person with 23 points and three 3-pointers and Juan Davis, Jr.'s double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds to put Milligan away for good. Troy improved to 6-2 when leading at the break.
QUOTABLE
"We needed a win," head coach Phil Cunningham said. 'I was disappointed with the way we ended the first half. We had a 23-point lead and we gave it up there. We set up their run.
Â
"That second half they spread us out. We've had trouble with those teams that spread us out, shoot threes and kick shots out. We had to fight for our lives to get out with a win."
UP NEXT
Sun Belt Play will begin in eight days on Dec. 29 with Georgia Southern coming to Trojan Arena. Â Â
Â
NOTEWORTHY
• It wasn't the Trojans best night from deep as Troy was just 6-23 (23.1 percent) on threes.
Â
• The win snapped Troy's four-game losing streak
Â
• Leading rebounder and second-highest scorer Jordon Varnado missed his seventh-consecutive game with a foot injury,
