TROY, Ala. – Despite not having Jordon Varnado in the lineup, Troy cruised along back at home in Trojan Arena to a 95-64 win over Delaware State in the third game of the Adolph Rupp Classic.
Wesley Person was right on track with a game-high 22 points on an effective 5-7 3-point shooting. The Trojans scored the second-highest amount on the season fueled by a season-best 64.7 percent shooting (33-51) from the floor.
Little could go wrong for Troy as the starting five did most of the heavy hitting. Juan Davis, Jr., who replaced Varnado, had his best outing on the season with 16 points on 6-7 shooting with four rebounds and a block.
Shawn Hopkins also had his best outing on the year as the forward had a season-best 16 points on 4-6 shooting with zero turnovers in 24 minutes of play. Alex Hicks added a dominant inside presence with 15 points from the floor.
The Trojans used all but one available player on the night and utilized that team effort to the tune of 20 assists, which marked the first time Troy has had at least 20 assists since hosting UT Arlington on Jan. 14 of last season.
QUOTABLE
"It was one of those take care of business type games," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "We needed to come home and reestablish a level of play at home that it takes to be a championship team.
"Everything was good on the road, but it's easier to do that because there are less distractions. We got a little bit of a curveball in shoot around with Jordon's injury, but I thought the guys responded well to take care of business."
UP NEXT
Troy will continue on in the Adolph Rupp Classic with another home contest against UIC on Wednesday.
NOTEWORTHY
• Varnado missed the game with a foot injury. The junior missed time throughout the preseason with the same injury.
• Kevin Baker had eight assists to fall just shy of reaching the 10-assist plateau. He would have become the first Trojan with 10 assists since Will Weathers had 12 against ULM on Jan. 21, 2012.
• B.J. Miller continued his strong play with eight points, four assists, four rebounds and zero turnovers.
