Troy Volleyball Drops Two in Opening Day of Maroon Classic

STARKVILLE, Mississippi – The Troy volleyball team dropped its opening matches to Portland, 3-2, and Mississippi State, 3-0 in the first day of the Maroon Classic.

The first match of the day began with the Trojans (6-7) going into five sets with Portland (4-3). Troy won the opening set 25-23 but fell in the second 25-21. The Trojans bounced back to win the third 25-22, but fell 25-23 in the fourth and 15-8 in the fifth.

The nightcap featured the Trojans facing host Mississippi State (7-5). Troy battled, but fell in three sets. The first set the Trojans lost 25-17 and the second by only six points, 25-19. The third set saw Troy with a -.190 hitting average and the Bulldogs run away with a 25-15 win.

STAT OF THE GAME (PORTLAND)
Portland had 19 service errors in the match, whereas Troy only had 11 service errors.

TURNING POINT (PORTLAND)
After the Trojans went up 2-1, Portland went on a 6-2 run late in the fourth set and won 25-23. That fueled the fire in the fifth set, where the Pilots began that set with a 5-1 run.

NOTEWORTHY (PORTLAND)
• Reina Terry picked up her fifth double-double of the season as she recorded 43 assists and 10 digs. She added seven kills on just eight attempts.

• Alisha Hinrichs set a new career-high in digs as she picked up 30 against Portland, after she earned 24 against UAB.
Â
• Leah Causey led the team with 10 kills and picked up four blocks. Causey also had a .368 hitting percentage. Landis was right behind her with nine kills and four blocks.

• Along with Landis, Jordyn Saulsberry and Logan Page each had nine kills. Page led the way among the three with a .350 hitting percentage.

Mississippi State had 40 kills to Troy's 24 kills. Troy only recorded a .026 hitting percentage for the match.

The Bulldogs went on an 11-4 run in the first set that put them ahead 22-14, which led to the 25-17 victory.

• Sara Landis bounced back to have eight kills and two total blocks.
