Three Trojans Named All-Stars in Respective Summer Baseball Leagues

TROY, Alabama – Three Trojan baseball players; Joey Denison, Chase Smartt and Corey Childress were recently announced as all-stars of their respective summer baseball leagues.

"I'm very pleased with the performance these guys have put on in summer ball," head coach Mark Smartt said. "All of the guys have done great so far and it is going to help for the upcoming season."

Childress, who plays with Harrisonburg Turks in the Valley Baseball League, has averaged close to a strikeout per inning with 41 strikeouts in 41.1 innings pitched. The Fairhope, Ala., native has pitched in seven games this year and started six with one complete game. He has a 4-2 record, one save and a 3.70 ERA. The Valley League All-Star Game was Sunday and Childress closed out the game in the ninth inning. He allowed one hit and one with batter along with a strikeout.

Denison has been on a constant tear all summer long with the Upper Valley Nighthawks out of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). He is leading the team with a .356 batting average, nine doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs. He has played all 25 games and has only committed one error. The NECBL All-Star Game will be held on Sunday at 5:35 p.m. CT. Denison will be a starting outfielder for the North Division.

Smartt leads the Brockton Rox, out of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL), with a .386 batting average. He has 32 hits including three doubles, one triple and one home run in 21 games. The Troy, Ala., native has scored 13 runs and has driven in 16 runs. The FCBL All-Star Game will take place on Wednesday in Worchester, Mass. Smartt will represent the East team.

Three other Trojans are on summer league rosters. Houston Mabray is teammate of Denison and is a member of the Upper Valley Nighthawks. He has struck out 14 batters in 14.2 innings of work.

Hunter Mercer and Drew Frederic are contributing to their respective teams as well. Mercer has appeared in 22 games for the Winter Garden Squeeze in the Florida Collegiate Summer League and Frederic has started 28 games for the High Point-Thomasville Hitoms out of the Coastal Plains League.
