FRANKLIN, Tennessee – Paced by under-par rounds from Jared Bettcher and Clayton Vannoy, the Troy men's golf team climbed two spots into 11th place in Wednesday's final round of the NCAA Franklin Regional at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
The Trojans shot even par on the day and finished the three-round event at 12-over par after shooting 5-under over the final two rounds. Troy will return its entire lineup next season as the Sun Belt Champions featured four juniors and a freshman.
Bettcher, who tied for 33rd place, led the Trojans on the day with a 2-under 70 and overall with a 1-under 215 for the tournament. His final round got off to a rocky start with a bogey and a double-bogey over the first four holes. However, Bettcher closed out the back nine – Troy started on No. 10 – with three birdies and made birdies on two of his final three holes of the day for his second straight round under par.
Freshman Calum Masters finished a shot behind Bettcher in a tie for 39th place after shooting an even round on Wednesday; he finished with an even-par 216 for the tournament. He finished with four birdies on the day, including a clutch putt on the par-5 seventh hole which moved Troy past Georgetown into 11th place.
Vannoy, who tied for 56th place at 4-over, made the turn at 2-under par after birdies on three of his final five holes on the back nine, including one on both No. 17 and No. 18. After bogeys on the second and sixth holes pushed his card to even, Vannoy birdied No. 7 and No. 9 around a bogey on the par-4 eighth to finish his day at 1-under.
Cam Norman shot a 3-over on the day and finished in a tie for 67th place at 9-over for the tournament. He made the turn at 2-over and was sitting at 4-over before the par-5 seventh where he sank a solid birdie putt to move to 3-over.
Luke Moser rounded out the field for the Trojans in a tie for 70th place at 12-over for the tournament. He shot a 5-over 77 on the day with a birdie on the par-3 No. 16
No. 2 Texas won the team title at 45-under par, while No. 9 Vanderbilt, No. 35 Houston, No. 14 LSU and No. 26 Virginia all advanced to the NCAA Championships. Houston's Michael Perras claimed individual medalist honors at 16-under par and James Madison's Ryan Cole tied for second place and earned the Regionals individual berth to the NCAA Championships.
