Troy Baseball Sweeps Georgia State, Clinches Spot in Sun Belt Tournament

"Our offense did a great job of capitalizing on all of our opportunities," Mark Smartt said. "Anytime we get a road sweep it's a huge accomplishment, especially in the fashion we did today with a convincing seven-inning win. I'm really proud of our team this weekend. We got back into great position in the league heading into the last series."
Troy (30-23, 15-12 Sun Belt) had its largest margin of victory of the season with a 13-run victory and it was the first three-game sweep of a Sun Belt opponent on the road since April 1-3, when they did it against Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark. With the win today, the Trojans also clinched a berth in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament beginning May 25 in San Marcos, Texas.
Troy began the game scoring at least one run in the first five innings and finished the game scoring at least on run in the final 13 of 18 innings of the series. The Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Justin Friend and Joey Denison. Troy added a run each in the second an third innings on a Steven Whitaker sacrifice fly in the second and a Trevor Davis single in the third.
Georgia State (23-29, 9-18 Sun Belt) scored two runs in the first inning on an error, with the bases loaded, which would have ended the inning.
Justin Friend walked with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and gave the Trojans a 5-0 lead. Troy drew 10 walks in the game, which ties a season high. A run scored on an error and Bert Givens delivered a two-run single through the left side and extended the Troy lead to 8-2.
In the fifth inning, Steven Whitaker gave Troy an 11-2 lead with a three-run blast to right field. He finished the day 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a career-high five RBIs. The five runs driven in are the most from any Trojan this season.
With an 11-3 lead, Troy added five runs in the seventh inning and took a 16-3 lead, which put the Sunday run-rule into effect. Windham Jackson drove in the first run of the inning with a single in right field. It was his first hit and RBI of the season. Two more runs scored on a sacrifice fly, a walk and on a throwing error by the Panther catcher.
Houston Mabray (4-3) picked up his first career Sun Belt win with a complete game. It was the first seven-inning complete game pitched by a Trojan, since Shane McCain did it against ULM on March 24, 2013. Mabray only allowed three runs – one earned – on six hits, struck out two and walked one.
Nine different Trojans picked up hits in the game. Denison went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Davis went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Givens chipped in with a 2-for-3 day, a run scored and two RBIs.
Troy returns to Riddle-Pace Field for its final regular season series against No. 23 South Alabama. First pitch is set for Thursday night at 6 p.m.
